President Wang Shuguo extended a warm welcome to Provost Verna Yiu and the delegation. He noted that FYUST persists in keeping pace with societal development and future trends, consistently consolidating its position as a new type of research-oriented university characterised by a high starting point, a compact yet elite scale, a research focus, and an international outlook. The university actively explores innovative talent cultivation mechanisms that integrate science and industry with education, while promoting its internationalisation with the support of high-quality international educational resources. Acknowledging that the University of Alberta’s status is a top-tier research university renowned in fields such as engineering, President Wang expressed hope for expanding cooperation with the university in talent cultivation, academic exchange, and other joint projects.

Provost Verna Yiu presented the University of Alberta’s “SHAPE” strategic plan and outlined the institution’s progress in energy, artificial intelligence, health, and other key disciplines. She also highlighted China–Canada exchange initiatives, including the Canada Learning Initiative in China (CLIC) and the Global Academic Leadership Development (GALD) programme, which provide students from both countries with excellent platforms for academic interaction. The University of Alberta has established solid partnerships with a number of Chinese institutions, and Yiu conveyed her expectation that the engagement with FYUST would serve as an opportunity to further explore more practical cooperation grounded in the principles of openness and inclusivity.

In the presence of the attendees, the two institutions formally signed an agreement for an integrated “3+1” and master’s consecutive degree programme. Under the agreement, undergraduate students majoring in Materials Science and Engineering at FYUST can go to the University of Alberta to take relevant courses during their fourth year; upon completion of their undergraduate studies, eligible students can proceed to pursue a Master of Engineering degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta.

The signing of this agreement marks an important step in FYUST’s internationalisation process. Fuyao University of Science and the University of Alberta will leverage on their respective academic advantages and educational resources, and collaborate on building a high-quality education cooperation platform. In the future, the two universities will continue to deepen mutual exchanges, striving to cultivate elites with competitive ability and a global perspective.
